A recent article on Autism in the Mississauga News was somewhat disappointing because it was only an overview of the disease, nothing that couldn't be learnt from Wikipedia. It would be more helpful in a regional newspaper to point to whatever local agencies are available to help. It only outlined the difficulties and problems associated with the onset of this affliction in today's children.
Awareness of the variety of autistic disorders and the services available in the schools to help spot these cases are relatively recent. Yesterday's children struggled with related syndrome's like Asperger's undiagnosed and unassisted by interventional therapies, especially in rural areas. They are now adults with communication and social shortcomings which severely handicap their earning capacity in spite of having high intelligence.
"Autistic youngsters require assistance from a whole team of professionals", says the article. Well, so do autistic adults and the problems of finding help and making and keeping appointments for those with communication deficiencies and low income need to be addressed. One problem is that they are now adults and therefore entitled to make their own decisions and, like anybody else, don't like to be pushed. Making an appointment to be assessed by a psychiatrist is not a boost to one's self esteem. So an article on how to help adults with this problem would be useful.
